I am pretty sure you can achieve an authentic portrait in the studio. Still, I think nothing unfolds authenticity in person better than the environment, "natural habitat "of the portrayed person or somewhere where they can be fully themselves and a photographer with good soft skills, so the person can be comfortable and relaxed being around.
